APT Announces 2019 Young Writers Contest Winners

Alabama Public Television is pleased to announce the winners of the 2019 APT Young Writers Contest!  The twelve winners will be honored at a special ceremony at the Alabama Book Festival , now part of the new three-day Anabranch Festival, on Saturday, April 13 at 12:00pm in Montgomery.

The APT Young Writers Contest encourages children in grades K-3 to write and illustrate their own book. Books may be fiction or non-fiction, poetry or prose. Parents are allowed to help younger children with putting the words on paper, but the stories and pictures must be entirely the child’s work.

The Young Writers Contest is one of many ways Alabama Public Television encourages reading and writing skills for children.  Research shows that early language exposure sets the foundation for cognitive ability, literacy, and school readiness — and it’s the strongest predictor of third-grade reading proficiency. The contest has been held every year since 1995 when it originated as the Reading Rainbow Young Writers Contest, an outgrowth of the popular PBS children’s series starring LeVar Burton.
